REQUIRED EMAIL

You must have an email account for this class. When using email, clearly identify who you are and what class you are in.

Deadlines

1.      Assignments for this class provide a “block deadline” that falls between a start date, and finishes with an end date (usually 7 - 10 days). THEREFORE – no assignment is accepted beyond the specified deadline date. Plan to turn your assignments in several days early – I will NOT accept excuses.

2.      Meeting deadlines are an absolute requirement in order to create a fair grading environment.

3.      Again! The Instructor reserves the right to not accept work that is turned in after the deadline -- REGARDLESS OF YOUR EXCUSE OR REASON!

4.      Religious Holidays: If you need to miss any class time or activity due to religious holiday observance, please notify the instructor in writing during the first two weeks of the semester (see syllabus policies below).

Communications

1.      It is your responsibility to monitor your MSCD Email, and ask questions regarding any factor(s) relevant to the class.

2.      When leaving a message for the Instructor, please leave your full name, telephone and class information (include this information in Email messages).
4.      Email protocol. When sending email messages, please follow these guidelines:

a.      Put the name of the course that you are taking in the subject line of the email and REPORT #.

b.      Start the email with a salutation (e.g., Hello or Hi). That tells me that it is the beginning of the message. Without it, I would not know if your complete message came through - then, write your message.

c.      At the end of your message, PLEASE sign your FULL name! - That tells me it is the end of your message!

Documentation

You must turn in all assignments with the following information clearly indicated on each document that is turned in:

1.      Your full name

2.      Class information & REPORT #

3.      Assignment description. All exercises must be clearly identifiable in regards to referencing a specific assignment. Any material not containing these criteria will not be considered for a grade.

The student is directly responsible for determining that an assignment was turned in. Always make a copy of all documentation turned in to the Instructor! Keep all of your returned graded documentation until the term has been completed and you have received your final grade.

Syllabus – Modifications

The Instructor, with advanced warning, may modify the contents of this syllabus during the term (via class announcements). It is the student’s responsibility to maintain familiarity with these changes. Changes often arise because of constructive student responses, or other factors that the Instructor feels will enhance the quality of the course. These changes may include, and are not limited to, deadlines, assignments, and grading policies.

No Credit (NC) and Incompletes

To withdraw from the course without penalty, you must request an NC from the admissions office before the deadline as stated in the term schedule published by MSCD. The student, not the Instructor, initiates the NC process and manages all paper work regarding official class administration![1] Keep your validated NC form in case of a processing error. Without an NC, dropping the class will result in a grade of F! Please refer to your current term schedule and course catalog for all student policies and responsibilities. NOTE: The Instructor will NOT issue an “I” (incomplete) for any reason.

Instructor’s Comments Regarding Grading

Grading is based primarily on effort and quality (how complete and accurate is the work), competition (how does the work compare to other students), and was it turned in on time. The Instructor believes that this evaluation criteria best simulates the same forces that shape your success in the work environment

Make sure that all requests regarding grades are made in writing. Your request must include your full name, student ID, relevant class, and detailed explanation.

Schedule

It is your responsibility to determine whether your personal situation during the semester is conducive to successfully completing this class. Please feel free to consult the Instructor for advice that will help you succeed in this course – however, be advised that the Instructor will not provide individual exceptions to this syllabus.

Rules

In accordance with the policies outlined in the MSCD Student Handbook, acts of academic dishonesty may lead to a failing grade for the assignment, a failing grade in the course, or probation, suspension or expulsion from the College. All instances of academic dishonesty are reported to the College's judicial advisor and become part of the student's official record. Acts of academic dishonesty include cheating, fabrication, plagiarism, and facilitating academic dishonesty.

SYLLABUS POLICIES

No Credit Withdrawal Policy: Students will be expected to know and observe the MSCD regulations regarding No-Credit Withdrawal (NC). It is the student’s responsibility to withdraw from a course. Students who withdraw after the census date will receive an NC on their transcripts. NC stands for No Credit and does not impact the student’s grade point average. NC deadlines for part-of-term classes vary. Withdrawal deadline for full-term courses with no faculty signature required: Withdrawal deadline for full-term courses with faculty signature required:

Students who have questions about tuition and fees refund deadlines should contact the Office of Student Accounts at 303-556-6188.

Accommodations for Students with Disabilities: Students who need an accommodation based on the impact of a disability should contact the instructor to discuss their specific needs. Students will need to provide the instructor with a disability verification letter from the Disability Services Office before appropriate accommodations can be made. Failure to notify the instructor in a timely fashion may hinder the college’s ability to assist students to successfully complete the course.

The Metropolitan State College of Denver does not discriminate on the basis of race, color, creed, national origin, sex, age, sexual orientation or disability in admission or access to, or treatment in, its educational programs or activities. Inquiries concerning Title VI, Title IX and Section 504 may be referred to Dr. Percy Morehouse, Director, Equal Opportunity, Metropolitan State College of Denver, 303.556.2939; or to the Office for Civil Rights, U.S. Department of Education, 1244 Speer Boulevard, Suite 300, Denver, CO 80204. Discrimination based on disability in admission to, access to or operation of programs, services or activities of the college is prohibited by the Americans with Disabilities Act.

Academic Dishonesty: Academic dishonesty is a serious offense at the College because it diminishes the quality of scholarship and the learning experience for everyone on campus. An act of Academic Dishonesty may lead to sanctions including a reduction in grade (up to and including a permanent F for the course), probation, suspension, or expulsion. Academic dishonesty includes cheating, fabrication, plagiarism, submitting the same paper or work for more than one class, and facilitating academic dishonesty. For definitions and more information, see the Student Handbook which is available online through Metro-Connect.

Class Attendance on Religious Holidays: Students at Metropolitan State College of Denver (MSCD) who, because of their sincerely held religious beliefs, are unable to attend classes, take examinations, participate in graded activities or submit graded assignments on particular days shall without penalty be excused from such classes and be given a meaningful opportunity to make up such examinations and graded activities or assignments provided that advance written notice that the student will be absent for religious reasons is given to the faculty members during the first two weeks of the semester.

Nothing in paragraph one of this policy shall require MSCD faculty members to reschedule classes, repeat lectures or other ungraded activities or provide ungraded individualized instruction solely for the benefit of students who, for religious reasons, are unable to attend regularly scheduled classes or activities. However, presentations, critiques, conferences and similar activities involving individual students shall be scheduled to avoid conflicts with such students’ religious observances or holidays provided that reasonable advance notice of scheduling conflicts is given to faculty members. Because classroom attendance and participation is an important aspect of learning, MSCD students should not register for courses if regularly scheduled classes or activities routinely conflict with their religious observances or holidays (e.g., conflicts resulting in weekly absences for an entire semester). Any MSCD student who believes that an MSCD faculty member has violated this policy is entitled to seek relief under Section V of the MSCD Equal Opportunity Grievance Procedure.

[1] I will not, under any circumstances, take documentation that is related to your NC decisions to the MSCD Administration offices! That documentation (NC forms) is your personal responsibility.
